Option 1:

Community Choice Electricity

Some communities offer their own Class I green electricity options. These communities use third-party suppliers to provide residents with affordable, greener electricity choices. In some cases, Green Energy Consumers supplies the renewable energy!

Cost: Varies by community. Each community has different supply rates for electricity, and the rates that include 50% or 100% green electricity typically cost 2-4 cents more per kilowatt-hour you use.

In some communities, payments for RECs are charitable contributions and are federally tax-deductible.

Billing: The community's pricing appears on your regular Eversource electric bill.

You make one payment to Eversource. You can cancel anytime by contacting your community's supplier.

Renewable energy sources: Massachusetts Class I resources such as wind, solar, low-impact hydro, and anaerobic digester gas.

Who can participate: Residents of communities on the Sign Up list below.

Frequently Asked Questions about new Green Powered options

Why are you making me change my account? Eversource is making changes to its billing system that would necessitate costly changes on our end, too. And because Community Choice Electricity (CCE) programs across the state are growing and are also offering Class I green electricity options at affordable rates, our program is shrinking. We decided to switch to a new form of billing our customers that is less costly for us as more and more consumers join their CCE programs (a good thing!).

What are my new options?
Community Choice Electricity is offered in many communities across the Commonwealth. These programs offer 100% green electricity options at affordable rates which appear directly on your electric bill. See if your community participates on our flier or at greenenergyconsumers.org/eversource.

Green Powered Subscription is a new Green Powered program that allows you to estimate your monthly electricity usage and make a set payment for green power each month via a payment method of your choice. Learn more on our flier or at greenenergyconsumers.org/eversource.

How do my new options differ from Green Powered 100% or 25%? With both options, you achieve the same impact because your subscription supports MA Class I renewable energy.

With Community Choice Electricity programs, we list those that support Class I Renewable Energy Certificates – the same as our Green Powered program does. Your payments for renewable energy will be part of your electricity supply price and will appear directly on your Eversource bill.

With Green Powered Subscription, the difference is that instead of matching exactly what you use on your electric bill, you pay a set amount each month to cover estimated usage. We still use the money to buy Class I Renewable Energy Certificates, just like we did with Green Powered 100% and 25%

What happens to my Green Powered 100% or 25% account when I sign up for a new option? We will close your current account by the end of September whether you sign up for a new option or not. If you sign up earlier, we will close your account ASAP.

What will happen if I take no action? We will close your current account by the end of September. If you do not choose a new option, we will cease providing you with green power. You can rejoin anytime.

What kind of renewable energy do my new options support? MA Class I renewable energy, generated by low- or zero-emission energy sources in New England.

Are my new options tax-deductible, like Green Powered 100% and 25% are?
Community Choice Electricity: Only communities whose renewable energy is supplied by Green Energy Consumers Alliance offer tax-deductibility for the portion of the supply price which covers the cost of RECs. These communities are listed at the top on our flier.

Green Powered Subscription: Yes!
